Your Pet Can’t Tell You It’s an Emergency—But We Can

If your pet is showing any potentially life-threatening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, a bloated abdomen with or without retching, the inability to pass urine or faeces, bleeding, seizures, or signs of severe pain, please don’t hesitate to contact us immediately. We’re here to ensure your pet receives the urgent attention it needs.

We offer a full spectrum of care, from outpatient therapy to intensive, round-the-clock treatment. Our focus is on stabilising and treating your pet, with the goal of transferring them back to their regular daytime vet for ongoing care.

At Wellington After Hours Vet Clinic, we are experienced in emergency and critical care and do not provide general practice services like vaccinations, routine desexing, or dental care. If your pet is in a critical condition or requires post-operative monitoring, your regular vet may refer them to us for after-hours treatment.

01. TRIAGE THE PATIENT

Our team will assess your pet’s condition when you arrive at Wellington After Hours Veterinary Clinic. We will transfer your pet to the emergency room for further examination and stabilisation if needed. This process may involve placing an intravenous catheter for medications like pain relief or seizure control, providing oxygen, or collecting blood or urine samples. We will always seek your consent before proceeding, as our priority is to address any immediate, life-threatening, or critical conditions and ensure your pet’s comfort.

If your pet is stable on arrival, you may need to wait in the waiting room until the vet is available. We’ll provide an estimated wait time and prioritise patients based on urgency. Be reassured that a wait time typically indicates that your pet is in a stable condition. Our staff are available to repeat a triage assessment of your pet if you are concerned their condition is worsening whilst you are waiting.

02. CONSULT WITH YOU

Once we have addressed your pet’s pain and any immediate anxiety or discomfort, one of our veterinarians will discuss the recommended next steps with you. This may include additional tests, such as X-rays or ultrasounds, keeping your pet at the clinic for further treatment, or allowing your pet to go home with monitoring and medication. In some cases, we may need to consider the difficult decision of humane euthanasia.

During these discussions, we will provide a clear cost estimate and encourage you to ask questions and express any concerns, ensuring you feel fully informed and involved in the decision-making process. We are committed to having open, compassionate conversations about all available options so that we can develop a treatment plan that works for you and your pet

03. TREAT THE PATIENT

If your pet needs to be hospitalised for further diagnostics or treatment, our team will keep you updated on its condition and any changes in treatment. We understand how important it is for you to stay connected with your pet’s progress.

When your pet is discharged, we will provide you with any recommended medications, dietary instructions, and recommended follow-up care with your regular veterinarian.

TESTIMONALS

“The best doctor in the world is a veterinarian. They can’t ask their patients what is the matter—they’ve got to just know.”

Will Rogers

Our pet was really ill when I brought in to the afterhours, the staff was very understanding and extremely helpful. the staff took care our pet over the weekend and managed to bring him back to his normal self within days, to be honest we thought we were having to say our good bye, but what the staff did, they managed to bring the joy back in to our lives.

We can’t thank the staff enough for what they did and would recommend the after hours vet clinic to anyone, like I’ve just said, we just can’t thank you enough.

Many thanks

Steve and Angela

These people are just the best – looking after our pets when nobody else is available. I’ve been down to the After Hours a couple of times this year and they’ve been fantastic. You can tell they really care and, despite the hours these folks have to work, I’ve never once heard any frustration or any negative energy from any of the staff. I thoroughly recommend After hours Vet Clinic. Thanks team!

John B

Incredibly attentive, kind, and patient. Explained everything really well, took time to say hello to our dog and treat it kindly, vet (Andy Maloney) was so gentle and considerate and went through everything with us. Nurses were all very friendly and caring.

We can’t thank the staff enough for what they did and would recommend the after hours vet clinic to anyone, like I’ve just said, we just can’t thank you enough.

Many thanks
