Sally thrives in the world of emergency work, where she can put her skills and passion to good use.

In her free time, Sally loves staying active, whether she’s out trail running, mountain biking, or hitting the gym. She’s often joined by her energetic Hungarian Vizslas or trying to keep up with her equally active family, including her three adventurous daughters!

He is a member by examination and a past president of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVSc) epidemiology chapter.

ANDY MALONEY

Andy Maloney has been working as a vet since 1986 when he qualified from Bristol University. He moved to New Zealand and joined the After Hours Clinic team just a few months after it was first opened in 1996.

As well as doing regular shifts at the After Hours clinic, you may see him helping out at various clinics around town, when their regular vets are sick or on holiday. When not working at the clinic, his main passions are nature, wilderness and conservation.

He volunteers at Zealandia and the Rimutaka Forest Trust, and has spent many summers working with New Zealand sea lions in the subantarctic for the Department of Conservation. He also enjoys exploring wild places on foot, by bicycle, or from the air by paraglider.

CHERIE MCLEAN

NZVNA Vet Nurse of The Year 2022

Cherie qualified as a vet nurse back in 2008 and has been working at WAHVC since 2011.

Although the work at WAHVC is challenging and emotional, Cherie thrives under the stressful and fast pace environment and finds the work very rewarding. In 2022 Cherie won New Zealand Veterinary Nurse of the Year.

After a busy shift, Cherie likes to come home and unwind with her pets.

Quoted from Interview with VNOTY 2022

Cherie, what would you say to other veterinary nurses that may want to become the next Vet Nurse of the Year?

I would say, appreciate and support your colleagues. Focus on upskilling and getting good at the technical
side as well as having healthy practices of debriefing the difficult or interesting cases. Also have a laugh! We have endless in clinic jokes. All my colleagues bring something unique to the clinic and we have a very supportive atmosphere, making the job so much more rewarding for everyone. I believe being awarded vet nurse of the year is a team effort.

GEORGIA STURROCK

I gained my certificate in veterinary nursing in 2012 and have worked in clinics ever since. I work full time at my day clinic but enjoy the variety of working at after hours as well. It also gives me a chance to further my nursing skills with an experienced team of colleagues.

I have three dogs at home-Rocky the German shepherd, Frankie the chihuahua and Fox the dachshund-who I bottle raised from two days old. Two cats and a daughter, all of which keep my home life very busy!

WAHVC has given Tanya the opportunity to grow as a nurse and she is constantly learning and picking up new skills each shift.

In her down time she enjoys spending time with friends & family and horse riding. Her fur family consists of a beautiful old Burmese cat who is extremely affectionate and smoochy, although very vocal and attention seeking at times.

LAURA Dickson

Laura originally qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in the UK in 2006 and worked in a number of first opinion and multi-disciplinary referral veterinary hospitals. She arrived in New Zealand in 2017 after travelling with friends, and started working with us within a couple of months of landing. Laura brings a wealth of experience and clinical skills with her, and she enjoys the thrill of emergency medicine and surgery. One of her favourite parts of working at the after-hours clinic is being able to nurse her patients back to health and then reuniting them with their owners.

COURTNEY MITCHELL

Courtney qualified as a vet nurse in 2017 and has been dedicated to providing compassionate care ever since. She enjoys the dynamic environment at WAHVC because there are always unique situations to learn and grow from.
